Lorraine Currelley, poet, writer, nurturer and founder of Poets Network & Exchange[/caption]If you enjoy poetry and all things literary then On-Line Classic Open Mic Poetry hosted by Poet Andrew Scott is the radio program for you. Tonight January 25, 2013 I was a guest along with a mosaic of  talented poets, writers and lovers of the written word. I read from Janet Stickmon’s book “Midnight Peaches, Two O’clock Patience” and “Full Breasted Women” a poem written by yours truly. This was a lovely end to a wonderful week of readings and sharing poetry.

Some of these readings included,  Spoken Word, at the New York Public Library‘s Soundview Branch, Open Expression in Harlem, hosted by CeCe Falls and Women Writer’s in Bloom Poetry Salon. At Women Writers in Bloom Poetry Salon I had the joy of participating with a group of talented women in an extraordinary workshop facilitated by Poet Kanika A…

homelessness|

The news tickler announced

The problem of sidewalks and homelessness

to be addressed; later

When will later come?

If not now then …

When will more jobs be created

with sufficient pay for survival?

When will people in need of shelter

be coupled with an empty foreclosed home?

When will families unable to work

be allowed to stay in their homes?

When is the United States’ share of 58% of

the $1.19 trillion dollars misappropriated

globally for killing be used for living?

The news commentator didn’t realize the

Problem wasn’t an unsightly sidewalk

and the question, “Spare change.”

The problem is survival with nowhere to call home

Mindfulness Walks| The Market|

The market down the street from us

Has seen 4 owners; since I first became aware of it

The most recent owners were seldom there

It was a family owned business I was told

They appeared from out of nowhere and

Disappeared in the same way

The staff always courteous; friendly; kind

When the most recent change of ownership took place

About 4 years ago right about the time my marriage ended

And we moved down the street

Wait – the owners before the current owners were still there

The shelves were stocked; reasonably fresh produce;

The freezers didn’t leak gallons of water on the linoleum

And the pasty looking guy that always wore Giants t’s still worked there;

But I digress …

I noticed the business hours were changed effective January 2, 2013

First hint of something was happening although I really

Didn’t pay much attention then

The guy with the bald head somewhere in his twenties

With the tat sleeve on his right arm hadn’t been there for a while

He was my favorite clerk

The guy he replaced, Wally, a member of the family, had started

A pizza restaurant somewhere else in San Francisco

A week later when we were walking by

The wallpaper-sized ad inside the wall-sized window

Was gone; and I noticed a sign “everything 20% off”

First sale I’d ever seen in 20 years

Curiosity made me go inside

The most recent new hire wasn’t smiling

He didn’t seem like his typical self

He was being watched by a man seated in a chair by the

Front door

Resembling the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man

In both appearance and intelligence

Very nosy and wearing a black jacket

One large word across the front – SECURITY

I asked the clerk I had come to know

What’s going on?  Who’s that guy?

Referring to the guy wearing the black “Security” jacket

I’ve never ever seen a security guard looking like he did

“He’s from the bank,” my store friend answered

“What do you mean?”

I heard myself ask

The answer was very brief

“I hope when the new owners come I can keep my job.”

I walked outside and a white guy with an odd hat

Followed me out and tried to seem nonchalant

As he asked me questions about the market

More like, how did I feel about the market

Did I go there often things of that nature

After a while of my barely answering his questions White

Hat guy seemed oddly interested in how much liquor the store sold

(was it lacking a liquor license and shut down I wondered)

Also odd the fact he continued to walk down the street with me

as if we were together; or old friends

When he could tell I didn’t know anything

He turned around and headed back towards the store

Today I went back in and asked Stay Puft Marshmallow Man

Still seated next to the front door

What was going on; I didn’t expect him to answer

He answered in such a strange way he led me to believe

The owners were more than just filing bankruptcy

It was an unusual situation

Not sure what that meant

They had 6 businesses; they “sunk” four of them

They weren’t going to be back

(Deported I wondered)

There are so many illegal aliens here now

The angry Stay Puft Marshmallow Man ranted

Taking our jobs away from us

Still I listened

Obama’s making thing worse

(of course, Stay Puft would feel that way

At first I thought  he worked for the bank – maybe an auditor and not a

Security guard; then I realized maybe he was working for someone else

and hoping someone would be returning; highly unlikely)

When I couldn’t stand the hatred in his voice any longer

I left … Hmmm, not sure I’ll ever find out what really happened

Pretty sure I won’t be seeing the owners again; or

Anyone that once worked at the store

that didn’t speak English as their first language

5.0 out of 5 stars A Powerful, Tender, Frightening and Transcendent Read September 24, 2012

Cancer Poetry is an intimate experience of the disease, and the fear of a body turned traitor against itself as well as the duties and struggles of a woman fighting to care for and protect her family and to stay alive. In 150 plus pages there is rawness, and anger, and fear in a constant battle with hope and love of family and life. If you have a friend or family member who has cancer, there may be a boundary, a line beyond which they will not share. This is a work peopled with intimate thoughts and sensations that no one of my acquaintance has ever shared with me. Yet Cancer Poetry can be so honest that it is obvious to me that these loved ones must have kept similar truths deep within themselves. This collection is an extraordinary work and a gift to the world.

Phantom Lovers| Tales in Modern Times|

Phantom Lovers| – Tales in Modern Times|

Close my eyes

Feel the pillows surround my body

Imagination always brings you to me

As I drift gently off to sleep

I imagine the feel of your strong arms around me

Soft gentle kisses reassuring me that tomorrow will come

I reach over and touch you; feel you harden at my touch

The sparkle in my eyes tells you I’m not ready for sleep

Unless you are; my hands feeling my body for now are yours

Delightful climax brings me to slumber; and

Dream of the day I will meet my nighttime phantom lover

I have a dream|

I Have a Dream|

To Martin Luther King, Jr|

We have come so far

But we have not yet come far enough

So much has changed since your speech

Yet so much remains the same

I Have a Dream

Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness

Will have true meaning and no longer be denied

I am waiting for the day

When we are all truly treated equal

Our gender, sexual orientation and

the color of our skin will bear no bias;

racial; gender and sexual orientation profiling will finally end;

A black man can run out of a store

Without raising thoughts of suspicion

No one will ever be stopped walking down the street

and forced to show proof that they are indeed an American citizen

Parents will not be separated from their children and deported

No one will be looked at as a terrorist

Because of certain facial features they were born with

Instead we will all blend in

No one will feel the need to propagate fear

And purposely under-educate our children

Any and all weapons will be archaic

Forgotten like the history lessons of the past

Which are now being recorded as untrue; tainted with hypocrisy and hate

Communication and love will unite us and keep us together

And the question in every child’s mind will be

What was the purpose of violence and war

Our brothers and sisters will no longer have to live on the streets

Frightened, hungry, unbathed, sick, alone; and

No single parent family will ever have to ration food again; or

Wonder where the next meal will come from;

Nor forfeit buying their child a warm jacket; clothes that fit; or

Replace a pair of duct taped shoes to pay the rent

A time when insurance companies; corporate greed and money

No longer are the ruling class; the people’s voice is finally heard

I have a dream that people will evolve and learn from the painful

mistakes of the past

Religious differences will finally be resolved as kindness will replace religion

I have a dream one day together we will occupy humanity; and

Forever after be known as one people; humankind

Razzle Love| A Poem|

He wore dreadlocks

She liked the way his hair looked

Hers was stringy in comparison; slippery soft

And fine

When he smiled his chiseled out features appeared

He was intelligent, artistic, relaxed

She was intelligent, artistic, calm

They had so much more in common than that

They both wrote poetry and loved music

Their favorite guilty pleasure

Razzles – first a candy, then a gum

Green Tea| Poetry|

In A Nutshell

A pile of information to process

Watch the names; phone numbers

And facts on the page turn to mulch

In time everything decomposes

Next build-up of pressure

Trying to communicate in a sea of

Bureaucratic bull shit

More compost is added to the growing pile of mulch

A one hour break to get away from it all

Gentle basketball game; I’m Kobe Bryant

Yes, the Heat my team of choice today

Mostly the day was filled with bureaucratic lunacy

Trying to recycle, selvage, rebuild my future

In the quiet I find the knowing

Over a pot of Green Tea

Dear Abby| A Poem

Dear Abby,

I’m in the third grade

My Mom says I need to wear a bra

I don’t want to grow up yet

I love to play outside

Sometimes my hair is brown;

sometimes it looks more blonde

My brother  puts an orange wedge in his mouth

laughs at me and says it’s me smiling

He tells me I run like a girl

I’ve worn glasses since I was two

I want to be a concert pianist

But I don’t have a piano

Maybe I’ll be a writer instead

I hope when I grow up I won’t be so shy

Awkward in California
Dear Awkward,

It sounds like you run like a girl

Because you are a girl;

You must have a beautiful smile;

That lights up your face;

Women pay big money to have

Their hair kissed by the sun

When you are older try wearing contacts

Maybe you can find a piano to borrow to

See if you like playing

You never know one day you may be

a writer

RIP – Dear Abby 1/17/13
