Sometimes you feel like you’ve just been

kicked in the teeth

When you’ve been broadsided by the harsh cruelties of extraordinary suffering, or maybe every day living and ordinary strife

Like that photo of Muhammad Ali standing in the ring

looking victorious while Sonny Liston is knocked out cold

I always want to be the prize fighter left standing in that ring

and because of that I always feel I am

No matter what hand life’s fickled finger of fate has dealt me

I’m the last man standing as my friend Milt used to like to say

You may not see it at the time looking at me

But I know I am; or should I say I’ve already won

You know the feeling when things are surreal

Yet you know because of all you have already been through

the champion of adversity and setbacks you are already okay

you are the Dark Knight Rising

yes, you will rise again this time too

like the sun rises each morning

for love and partly habit if for nothing else

Everyone has known this feeling at least once

Some of us have known it many times

we wear our scars like badges

and treasure those that we love

we fight back the tears when we look into the ring

and see that someone we love has been hard hit

they are the opponent, Sonny Liston knocked out on the floor

and life is Muhammad Ali left standing in the ring

We have no choice but to

reach for the smelling salts

and help lift them up

for some of us darkness and strife becomes a familiar tune

one that you’re not sure if you should welcome

into your home each time you find it waiting on your doorstep

or try to step over it

why not let it in it’s already there

Maybe you should feel a little sickened by it

This happens each time you are faced with

loss of love, disease, or a shocking change of circumstance

Some of us experience this many times in our lives

until we become experts at it

Each time you feel you are facing your own mortality you are shocked into

Awareness and appreciation

Why should today be any different than any other day

Every moment of every day you already are facing your own mortality

You usually just don’t realize it until you are shocked into remembering

Seize the moment!

Why wait?
