A Love Duet

I

the unleashed dog
ran ahead of his human
the toddler giggled
and chased the dog
when the little girl
caught up with the dog
she hugged the dog tight
and the dog licked her face
they both rolled in the sprinklers
to cool off
the little girl started throwing mud
at her dog
the dog stood there patiently
waiting for the game of one sided catch to end
when he had enough
the dog shook the mud and water off his coat
and ran away
the little girl didn’t seem to notice

II

She pondered the power of the universe
and her insignificance in the scheme of things
he painted her toenails as she sipped her mint julep
it was the heat of the summer and after all
she was a southern belle
she felt the blush of her second drink
and laughed just to laugh
he would do anything for her
even during baseball season
she knew it had to be love
